We, Puerto Ricans identify ourselves as Boricuas, a word that originated from the Taino word Boriken (also known as Boriquen, Borinquen, or Borinquen), to illustrate our recognition of our Taino heritage.

The word Boriken, which means “the great land of the valiant and noble Lord”, was used by the original Taino Indian population to refer to the island of Puerto Rico before the arrival of the Spaniards.

The use of the word Boricua has been popularized by descendants of Puerto Rican heritage, commonly using the phrase, “Yo soy Boricua” to identify ourselves as Puerto Ricans.
